I've loved Alison Bechdel's work since I first discovered her book collections of Dykes To Watch Out For which of course collect her comics strips she's done for alternative newspapers. Her characters aren't the lipstick lesbians that guys fantasize about and Bechdel herself is probably called a feminazi by some because her characters wrestle with living in a culture that is male dominated.
The highlight of my 2007 San Diego comic convention was seeing / hearing Bechdel's panel presentation of her work and getting my copy of Fun Home signed by her. Fun Home is her autobiographical graphic novel about her closeted homosexual father, how he committed suicide, the funeral home they owned when she was growing up (that's where the title "Fun Home" comes from), and her own homosexuality. Time magazine didn't just call it the best graphic novel of 2007, they called it the best BOOK of 2007. Cristina bought a copy at my store last year and she started reading it but with her studies didn't finish it and I don't know if she ever did finish it. You probably don't know that as you two haven't talked in a long time.
Thanks for posting about this on your blog because I hadn't heard about it previously (I'm surprised it didn't make any of the comic "news" sites I visit.
